I have so much Canadian pride and that doesn’t stop once the winter Olympics are over, it also translates to my shopping habits! I love to support local both here in Edmonton and around the country. It’s great for the economy, it’s great for the smaller shops and I love saying that something in my closet is from a Canadian brand. Keep reading for a few of the best Canadian retailers so you can shop Canadian too!
Shop Canadian: The Best Canadian Retailers
The Skinny
The Skinny is a local Edmonton shop that sells super cute clothing pieces for women and kids. I love the vibes of the store and all the pieces they have in there are drool worthy. I snagged this sweater from them in early January and it’s literally the softest sweater I own. Plus, they also sell Girlfriend Collective which is an activewear brand made out of plastic bottles. Supporting local and the environment: win, win!
The sweater is showcased in all its glory in this post.
Workhall
Edmonton based and Indigenous owned, this place is the real deal. They also offer lifetime alterations for their pieces in an effort to keep them out of the landfill. So if you buy something Workhall from a buy and sell page, just take it into the store and they’ll alter it to fit you right there. AND if you don’t like your piece anymore, the seamstresses will redesign your item to something you actually want to wear. UMM WHAT?!
Workhall is where I got my go-to holiday party dress and another party dress shown in this post.
Oak + Fort
Oak + Fort started in Vancouver and has been an Edmonton favourite for YEARS. I bought my first piece from them when I was just starting high school and I still have it to this day. They have such cool designs for pieces that you probably didn’t know you needed until you saw it on someone else. Well today is your lucky day because the blog has been graced with a LOT of Oak + Fort over the years. It all started with this top and one of my favourite pants in my closet that I’ve taken with me to Australia and Ecuador.
This past year I snagged a few new (to me) pieces originally from Oak + Fort, but I got them secondhand. I can’t wait to share them when the weather finally permits!
Mint Collective
This one is specific to those of us in Edmonton since they’re a a secondhand shop in town. This space is the collaboration of 3 different vintage/secondhand sellers who have such cute pieces. I’ve bought a few things this past year from each of the 3 before they combined forces into one shop including a cute leather jacket, this vintage denim piece and a vintage blazer. If you’re not in YEG you’re still in luck, they sell pieces through their individual Instagram stories too!
I snagged the above tops from the shops included in the Mint Collective and I love that they were so much cheaper than if I had bought them new!
Frank & Oak
Frank & Oak was under the radar for so long. Once their subscription box started being promoted all over social media, I feel like they blew up! They have the coolest pieces, both unique but still classic. I haven’t snagged anything from here yet, but I was able to find a brand new sweater from F&O at Goodwill. The quality is so nice and I love the classic silhouette. It’s just a plain black crew neck, but it really makes me want to look harder in store.
I wear it all the time over on my Instagram stories where I share my daily looks!
Poppy Barely
This brand not only started in Edmonton, but they also produce their produces ethically. It’s definitely more on the pricey side of the shoes on the market, but they have some super cute styles that could be worth saving for. I’ve never tried a pair of shoes from PB myself, but they’ve been on my want to try list for a while because I’ve heard they’re super comfortable! I always have problems finding flats that are comfy, so maybe these will finally be the ones!
Duval
Duval Canada is a bag and accessories company with products made right here in Edmonton in Esther’s home. The bags are so cute and it’s awesome to support a one woman show! Years ago, I bought a choker necklace from her (from this post) and I also snagged a bag chain (in this post). The next thing up on my list from Duval is a bag so I better get saving!
Mejuri
This will only be a new company to you if you’ve been living under a rock and not on your computer in the past year. This Canadian company came out of nowhere with all their online marketing and now they are super well known. For good reason too! They offer affordable high end jewelry in beautiful and unique designs. I wear a ring from them pretty much every day and I have a few things on my wishlist.
Emma Knudson
You might recognize this gal from Jillian Harris’ blog because she is a staple in every Etsy collab Jillian does. She makes beautiful dresses and clothes right here in Canada and they always turn out so beautiful. The red Jillian dress is my favourite; maybe one of these years I’ll actually buy it for the holidays!
These are some of my faves that I’ve either shopped from over the years, or have on my list to check out the next time I go to the mall. I would love to hear who what Canadian shops you love supporting! Let me know in the comments.
xx Victoria
