I have always been an avid reader. I used to spend my allowance almost exclusively at Chapters buying books that I would devour in a night. I’d say reading almost became an addiction of mine; not a bad addiction, but an addiction none the less!
I would buy so many books and read so much, I was getting to the point that I literally didn’t do much else. My friend and I would actually have “reading playdates” where we would go over to each other’s house and read for HOURS. Maybe that’s where my love of being inside came from..?
5 Reasons You Need to Sign Up for a Library Card
1. It’s free
If this isn’t incentive in and of itself to get yourself a library card, I don’t know what you need people. I basically live for free stuff.
2. It’s better for the environment
This year, a goal of mine was to be more environmentally conscious and reduce my waste. A library card is a simple step to getting there. I tend to read books fast which translates to more books and therefore more buying books. The library card lets me read to my hearts desire without continually buying books which wastes paper. If you have an eReader, then this one doesn’t really apply to you. I’ve got to get one of those!
3. It’s better for your home
In true Marie Kondo fashion, there’s nothing worse than living in a clutter filled home. For me, a lot of the clutter that I had was due to all the books I was buying. Some I kept even though I knew I would never read them again, because they were so crappy I couldn’t even get through them once. Now that definitely does NOT bring me joy.
By using the library to check out books, you’re eliminating a huge source of clutter in your house. Obviously, this comes with limits. If I absolutely loved a book, I’m definitely buying it and adding it to my collection. The same goes for books I receive as gifts – because to be honest, that’s probably one of my favourite things to give and receive! But by using the library, you’re able to only keep things that really bring joy.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, now is the perfect time to put that newly minted library card to use and check out Marie Kondo’s The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up. She has a Netflix show too where she implements her tidying methods into homes that need some serious tidying help. Worth the read, and now that it’s become an outright phenomenon, definitely worth implementing in your own house.
4. It’s better for your wallet
Like I said in the beginning, my entire allowance and paper route money used to go straight to the bookstore. If you didn’t know, books are pricey! If you’re getting new versions in hardcover, you’re going to be dishing out $30 for a book. That $30 could be going literally anywhere else if you’re using the library because it’s the same reward for none of the cost. In both cases, you’re reading the book, but in only one case are you paying the money.
Treat yourself to a coffee with a bit of your saved money, and read your new library book at a cute café!
5. It’s better for your mind
I’m a really fast reader. For instance, in the whole vampire craze of 2008, I read the entire 900 pages of Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer in 1 day. Now it did take me all day, but it was still only one day. I bought the book too (obviously) so I spent $30 on one day of entertainment.
Growing up, I tend not to have time to read that fast, but I can still easily get through a book in a few days. When I was still buying my books, I would try and slow my reading down so I wouldn’t have to buy a new book so fast. That’s not the point of reading if you ask me. With my library card now, I love that I can read at my normal speed, without feeling guilty that it’s not taking me long enough to get my money’s worth.
Plus, there are SO many book options at the library, I’m able to read a ton of different books and genres. I’m finding new books that I never even thought of reading, and if I don’t like them, I just return it without finishing the book. Easy peasy, and not a cent out of my wallet!
