As a fashion addict, I’ve learned a few things over the years that hopefully I can share to make your life a little easier. I get it, not everyone is into fashion. Or maybe, you’re kind of into fashion, but don’t really know where to start. Well I’M HERE FOR YOU!
Here are a few easy and useful fashion tips I’ve picked up that I think can give ya a little jolt in the right direction.
- Buy for the fit, not the size on the tag.
- If a trend doesn’t work for you, leave it behind.
- Colours are meant to be mixed.
- Matching separates are the easiest way to be chic.
- The second easiest is to wear 2 shades of the same colour as an entire outfit (i.e. dark blue pants with a light blue sweater)
- If you’re wondering if it should be ironed, it should be. Don’t second guess.
- Don’t buy something unless you can think of at least 2 outfits with it that you already own.
- If you think you can’t pull something off, you’re WRONG! You can if you try and show people you’re confident in it.
- Do NOT buy something if it’s not perfect in the store. You’ll like it less once you bring it home.
- Florals for spring may not be new, but they WORK.
- Ripped jeans are cute until theres 50 different rips in the thighs. Keep the number of rips on a pair at under 10.
- Keep the tags on for the first wear. If you love it when you get home at night, rip them off. Otherwise, return.
- Cute sweatpants say Athleisure. Ugly sweatpants say Deadbeat. Know the difference.
- Some pieces are worth investing in.
- Short shorts are cute until you’re showing too much. I don’t care how nice your butt is, it’s not cute! Get a slightly longer pair for the same vibe, but less cheek.
- If you’re mixing patterns, go for one smaller print and one larger print.
- Avoid sneakers/closed top shoes if your pants hit right at mid calf. Go for it if they’re slightly longer, but if not, opt for pumps, taller boots or sandals to elongate your leg. Otherwise, legs can tend to look a little stumpier than they actually are.
- Socks do make a difference. Make sure you’re wearing ones that show as little as possible if they’re not a part of your outfit.
- It’s better to wear no tights at all than tights with runs in them.
- Wearing the same colour of shoes as your pants elongates your leg and can bring your entire outfit together. Try it out!
- Stick to the rule of larger silhouettes only on one half of your body. If your top is baggy, opt for a smaller bottom and vice versa.
- By layering pieces of different lengths, you can easily create interest in otherwise simple looks. Start with a long shirt and throw a sweater overtop!
- Trousers can instantly turn an outfit from drab to fab. If you want to up your look a notch, try out a pair! If you have thick thighs like me, you can check out my fave ones here.
- Have all your absolute basics in black (aka tank top, trousers, turtleneck), because you can always build out from there. My top trouser is this pair if you’re in the market!
- Match your metals. Silver hardware on your boots should usually be matched with silver hardware on your jacket – unless the metal is subtle, stick to the rule to look like you tried harder than you did!
Those are my top 25 easy and useful fashion tips! I find myself noticing things more and more as I’m styling new outfits and becoming more creative with what I wear. Try them out for yourself and let me know what your top tips are!
