As I’ve moved past my 18th and now 19th year, and my seemingly high tolerance for disgusting tasting alcoholic drinks, mojitos have become my drink of choice (the drinking age in Alberta is 18). For my 20th birthday this year, I decided that instead of going out and blowing an absurd amount of money on mojitos (they cost like $9 for one… YEAH not happening), I chose to make my own at home before heading out. You know when you make something at home and it turns out to be crap compared to the restaurant?? Well that’s what I was expecting with these. And then I blew my own mind. They were amazing. So amazing, that I wanted to share them with the world. Even though I didn’t follow a recipe or even a guideline (just came up with my own, but from lots of experience tasting them and looking at their ingredients on menus).
Ingredients: Very ripe raspberries, lime, mint, soda water, white rum, simple syrup, ice
- Put 3 raspberries and 4 mint leaves at the bottom of the cup (you can change quantities based on preference). Squish together with a flat topped utensil (I used a whisk that had a big handle). Add lime juice.
- Add 1 tablespoon of simple syrup and 1 ounce of white rum (or to preference). Stir.
- Fill cup 3/4 full with soda water. Stir.
- Top with ice and garnish with more mint leaves and raspberries.
And there you have it. It seems almost comical to me to be writing a post about this because it is so easy, but everyone that I’ve told about this said it was so helpful because they would have never known how to make a mojito otherwise! These are my fav alcoholic beverages, but because they’re so pricey at restaurants, I now tend to only have them when they’re homemade and I don’t have to give up a weeks’ pay.
Try making them at home, and I promise you will not be disappointed! Let me know how it worked out on twitter or instagram by tagging @strungingold. Enjoy your mojito!!

That’s so smart of you to make your own drinks instead of going out for them! Mojitos are quite a popular drink where I am as well.
