As I was looking for a camera to get me through the next many years, I had a lot to consider. Not only did I plan on starting a blog ASAP, but I also had to consider that in less than a year I was most likely moving to Copenhagen, Denmark for a semester abroad. This meant that I had to keep a budget in mind (Denmark is a very expensive place to live…). Also, I had to ensure the camera I chose would be versatile enough to travel with me through Europe, most times, with just a backpack in tow. Therefore, it had to be lightweight, relatively small, and quite frankly, it had to look good!
Why I chose the Olympus O-MD Mark II Camera

I researched the cameras that bloggers used and each one said DSLR, mostly focusing on Canons. So that’s what I went with. All the research went into Canons and then focused on the t5i after a friend said she had the version from a few years back. From there, I took a turn to the T6s because it was better quality.
And then went into a camera store… I wanted to see what I had researched and get a expert’s opinion. When I went there though, I was completely surprised; the Canons were massive. Definitely couldn’t justify buying one because I would have to lug it around Europe with absolutely no chance of fitting it in my bag. Plus, it was $1200 for all the parts I wanted, which was a little steep for my fresh out of university budget. When I asked for other suggestions after basically telling him my life story, he pointed me to the Olympus O-MD Mark II immediately. It was his #1 recommendation for what I was looking for and it was so cute I couldn’t stop thinking about it.
In my research, I had looked at some mirrorless cameras but sidestepped them because I thought you couldn’t change the aperture or shutter speed which was a huge part of me upgrading from my phone in the first place. Talking with Kevin (the sales associate) I changed my mind. Not only could you customise the setting to what you wanted, but it was also lighter than most of the other ones I had looked at, and it’s super cute. I wouldn’t mind walking down the streets of Copenhagen with it hanging from my neck, I’m thinking it will end up being a permanent accessory.
Now I’ll start my lense search. It might take me a little while because my bank account is trying to recover from the camera extravaganza.
Even though I’m not a camera guru at all (seriously, at all..), after my research I’m a tad more in the know. Now it’s just a question of if I can figure out how to work it best… might take me a little, but I’ll keep you posted. As of right now, I have figured out a few things. I can already tell a huge difference in my photos compared to pictures from my phone. I’m in love with the ability to change the aperture and shutter speed. It lets me take so much brighter photos that I was every getting before, even on a gloomy day.
If you want a more in depth review of the camera, this is a great one!
What are your favourite lenses? I would love to know!
