If my semester abroad to Copenhagen, Denmark was rated based on how many cafés I made it to, I was guaranteed an amazing time! Friends and I would head to coffee shops around the city at least twice a week, many times stopping for pastries on our way home from just about everything.
The coffee in Europe is, within itself, a reason to travel there. Copenhagen blew me away with not only their coffee, but their incredible pastries and the amazing atmosphere in just about every single café. I wrote about why Copenhagen became my favourite city in the world and the cafés were a big part of that!
This is a long post, but I’m a strong believer that the cafés you visit can make or break a city. SO I’ve put together my list of the best coffee shops in Copenhagen that you can’t miss while you’re in the Danish capital!
Café Guide to Copenhagen
Café N. 11
Sankt Annæ Pl. 11, 1250 København, Denmark | Price: $$$
This quickly was my favourite coffee shop in the city. As it always seems to go, my friends and I discovered it on our very last day in the city. It’s just a skip away from Nyhavn and looks out onto such a serene street that you could sit there all day! Make sure to pick up a piece of the carrot cake!
Maude’s
Gammel Kongevej 164, 1850 Frederiksberg, Denmark | Price: $$
Sandwiched right in the middle of a bustling street close to Copenhagen Business School, this café was easy to fall in love with. Inside is small but adorable with mismatched furniture and an open concept space, but it’s the outside patio that really got me. They have tons of spots outside to sit under a huge tree and watch as the bikes go by. You can’t make a wrong choice when it comes to what to eat, so it just means you’ll have to go back a couple times to try it all!
Coffee Collective
Jægersborggade 57, 2200 København, Denmark | Price: $$
Coffee Collective is a chain in Copenhagen and as such has a few locations around town. My favourite was the shop on the corner of Jægersborggade which is a street in Nørrebro. The street itself has a ton of local Danish shops and restaurants that even without CC it’s worth strolling.
Zaggi’s
Frederiksborggade 43, 1371 København, Denmark | Price: $
I used to pass this coffee shop on my way to the city centre and every time I wanted to try it more and more. It was the cheapest coffee I got in Copenhagen, by far, and equally as delicious. You cannot miss out on the Danish cake! Just a warning, although it’s super cheap, they only accept cash so make sure to bring some change!
Holm
Købmagergade 2, 1100 København, Denmark | Price: $$
A bakery and coffee shop chain that can be found throughout Copenhagen, it was their sandwiches that really drew me in. They have a huge selection of pastries and some lunch items and coffee of course. I continually kept going back to pick up a croissant and their pesto, avocado and chicken sandwich!
Laura’s Bakery
Linnésgade 17, 1363 København, Denmark | Price: $$
Laura’s is located inside the Glass Market (also known as Torvehallerne) right in the thick of city centre. It has the most amazing pastries (you can’t go wrong with anything), as shown in the cover photo of this post! The market has such a cool atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to sit for a bit with your coffee before heading to walk the lakes just a few blocks away!
Moller Kaffe & Køkken
Nørrebrogade 160, 2200 København, Denmark | Price: $$$
This beauty was right in the heart of Nørrebro, the neighbourhood I lived in during my stay in Copenhagen. It was voted best breakfast in Copenhagen in 2015. I’m telling you, it has not lost any edge over the past 3 years! The warm drinks are absolutely delicious, especially because they’re served in the coolest mugs. I vow to buy a set when I go back, my suitcase just couldn’t squeeze them in last time!
Paludan’s Book & Café
Fiolstræde 10, 1171 København, Denmark | Price: $$
This is a popular place in town and for good reason! It has some great food and drink options for a more reasonable price than a ton of other places in Copenhagen. It’s located in the heart of the shopping streets in downtown Copenhagen and is filled to the rafters with books of every kind.
You’ll probably have to hunt for a table because it seems to be the place to hang out on a rainy day in the city! Their chai was one of my favourites and they came with a mini biscotti on the side. The cookies alone are what kept me coming back for more!
Cafida
Fiolstræde, København, Denmark | Price: $$$
This spot is on the more expensive side (if you could consider anything in Copenhagen not on the more expensive side!), but has a really cool concept, I’d say it’s worth the visit. The coffee actually comes out of taps that are self serve on the front counter.
I wasn’t expecting much of the coffee because let’s face it, it was coming out of a tap. So I was super surprised to have one of the better coffees I’ve had in my life.. out of a tap..
Overfor
Rosenørns Alle 32, 1970 Frederiksberg, Denmark | Price: $$$
I didn’t grab a coffee at Overfor, but their hot chocolates are definitely worth the visit. I headed over for brunch and had the most amazing traditional Copenhagen breakfast. These brunches have just about everything packed onto a plate: eggs, bacon, yogurt, fruit, pastries, and more. It can be
Emmery’s
Ved Vesterport 3, 1612 København, Denmark | Price:$
This is by far the best breakfast you’re going to get in Copenhagen at a reasonable price! The food is very good and they have so many delicious breads and pastries that you’ll probably end up taking some home! Their soft boiled egg is one of the best I had in Copenhagen. It comes with some homemade bread that will have you wanting to buy a second plate. There are a few around town so I’m sure you’ll find one close to wherever you need to be!
Granola
Værnedamsvej 5, 1819 Frederiksberg, Denmark | Price: $$
Granola was a cute little breakfast place towards the eastern side of Copenhagen. For the most part, these cafés are centred around downtown so if you’re closer to the Versterbro area, this might be the place for you! Careful though, they stop serving breakfast at 1 so make sure to pop by early. I got caught on this more than a few times. Make sure to try out their pastries while they’re still in stock!
Helmdalsgade 22
Helmdalsgade 22 København, Denmark | Price: $$
Another Nørrebro café, but this one seemed to be less well known than the ones above. It was hidden beside the striped hill in a tiny corner shop and had the cutest interior. It was filled with old records and mismatched furniture and produced one of the smoothest lattes I have ever had.
Brasserie du Nord
Kongens Nytorv 15, 1050 København, Denmark | Price: $$$
Located at the top of Magasin (Copenhagen’s biggest department store), it showcased a gorgeous view of the downtown and Nyhavn area. I could have sat and stared out that window for days while I indulged in a few (more) pieces of cake! This coffee shop is not your typical food court with white bookshelves and plants littered around the café. It’s always a good time to spend a little time shopping, and then rest of your time admiring Copenhagen’s views!
Original Coffee
Illum, Østergade 52, 1001 København K, Denmark | Price: $$
Another coffee shop in the heart of downtown and at the top of a shopping centre! This time, stop into Illum and head right to the top to check out the floor of interlocking restaurants. This cute café sits right on a corner so you can see for kms through the city. Make sure to grab a latte or two and enjoy the views (again!).
Any and all these places are worth the visit, mostly because you’ll be in the best city in the world! I can’t wait to go back to Copenhagen and induldge in a few (or lots) more lattes and croissants!
xx Victoria
