Do you want to get more into secondhand but don’t know where to start? Or maybe you love secondhand but are looking for a few new spots to keep on your radar. Keep reading for all my favourite places to shop secondhand including local winners and online beauties.
I love shopping secondhand. Like LOVE shopping secondhand.
If you’ve been around here for even a minute, that’s probably not new information.
I could rant about my love for secondhand shopping for ages. Instead I’ll say that I would say a good quarter of my wardrobe is secondhand and I’m going to tell you exactly where I got it all from.
Because lets be real, if you’re not into the secondhand game, it’s pretty daunting on where to even start looking.
We’ll start with this dress.
I actually snagged it off Ebay after I decided I “had to have it” and not being able to find it anywhere else. I’ll tell ya, once I have something in my mind, there’s no stopping me from finding it. I will say that shopping secondhand on Ebay wasn’t my favourite in this case. I had to pay the upfront costs and then also the Canadian duties, which ended up being the same amount as the dress itself.

What it’s best for: Great condition clothes and accessories
These spots only take the best of the best, that’s why you can always find cute pieces in amazing, like new condition, for a fraction of the retail price.
This is probably one of the easiest spots to start as there aren’t many things you have to watch out for when purchasing. They do all the tricky stuff for you. That being said, make sure you know your size in lots of brands and/or your measurements. It will make it a lot easier to shop.
My favourites: Mood Consignment, Mod Uncorked, Shop Truce
FB Marketplace
What it’s best for: Homewares and furniture, random things you need
FB Marketplace is amazing but finicky, depending on the seller. It can be a pain in the butt to coordinate pick up with everyone’s schedule and sometimes the items are not exactly as they seem. That being said, FB Marketplace is GREAT for some things. I love looking here for furniture and other house items. People are constantly posting things when they move for great deals and it’s usually in great condition.
I was able to completely organize my closet from things I found through FB Marketplace and it ended up being MUCH cheaper than it would have been otherwise.
Poshmark
What it’s best for: Finding certain pieces you’ve had your eye on that are old and no longer in stock
This is my go-to place for searching for things I had my eye on in store, never picked up, and then regretted. I wouldn’t say that happens often, but sometimes it does and Poshmark always pulls through. Or, this is also a great place to search for something you’re about to buy. I’ve tried my luck a few times to try on here before I went and bought it new, and actually found it!
Poshmark is best if you know what you’re looking for. I haven’t had much luck here “browsing” the options and finding something I like randomly. Usually I’ll be reminded of something I liked and take a peek here.
I’ve found some old Aritzia pieces that I loved, a second of my favourite Oak + Fort top that I wear ALL the time, and I’m currently searching for the top of a matching sweat suit set I lost last year. Here’s to hoping I can snag it!
I sell all my old clothes on my Poshmark account, but I’ve found tons of beautiful pieces on here in my day.
Goodwill
What it’s best for: Finding great deals and cool vintage pieces, cups and glasses
Goodwill is a thrifter’s dream. But, it’s a bit trickier to navigate. There are so many unknowns and room for failure, so maybe only take this one on after a bit of practice.
I have found more than my fair share of amazing things here, but trust me when I say it took time. This is a one stop shop so you could realistically be in here for hours. I’ve found everything from clothes to books and movies, school supplies and champagne flutes. You name it, they have it.
My favourites: Check out my favourite locations in Edmonton here.
I think my love for secondhand will continue to grow. I’ve been on a kick to curb my consumption and this is a great start for me.
Where are your favourite places to shop secondhand?! Let me know in the comments, I’m always looking for new great secondhand finds.
