Why You Need to Re-Wear Your Clothes More
We all know I shop a lot. It’s what I like to do. I’m not denying it. But I try and be really intentional with my purchases now. It helps that my entry level job in accounting doesn’t exactly bring in big bills, but more than that, I want to reduce my clutter, harm on the environment, and most importantly feel amazing in my clothes. All those things considered, if there’s a piece in my closet, I bought it because I LOVED it.
If I loved it enough to whip out the cash for it, I should be able to re-wear it multiple times. That’s my logic anyways. Obviously there are times when this isn’t the case. I have my high school graduation dress sitting in my closet for my next black tie event which is obviously not getting much wear. And that’s okay! But for the most part, your closet should be full of pieces you love to wear and feel great in. That is the point of getting ready, is it not?
You spent your hard earning $$ on these clothes. Put it to use!
Make these buys worth it! There’s no point in seeing your clothes in your closet collecting dust when you could have been making interest on that cash!
I have used the price per wear system for about 2 years now and it’s really changed the way I re-wear things in my closet. It’s forced me to reevaluate the things I own and what I should and shouldn’t be spending my money on. For instance, these trousers have been worn over 120 times, but this leopard top has only been worn 3 times. Even though the trousers were 3x the price, I have worn them enough to get them to $1 per wear. The top cost me $45, but still is costing me $15 because I’ve worn it so few times.
You can check out the post here where I go into major detail about the system. Plus, sign up for my mailing list over there and you can download the exact spreadsheet I use for free!
Forcing yourself to wear old pieces makes you more creative.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked in my closet, convinced I had nothing to wear. Recently I decided to try a new method to make sure everything in my closet is getting worn. I turned all the hangers the opposite direction (hooked from behind). Every time I wear something, I hang it back normally. That way, I know exactly which pieces I’ve worn in the past few months and which ones I haven’t.
Most days, I’ll look in my closet and see which items I have that have been unworn for a while. By showing myself what stuff I haven’t worn, I’m forcing myself to think of new combinations with those pieces, leading me to make up new outfits that I never would have put together before.
This outfit is case and point. I snagged this jacket from Mood Consignment last month and hadn’t worn it a ton. This leopard top was a 2019 buy and it was hanging backwards in my closet. I knew both items needed more love but hadn’t really considered putting them together until I saw that they both needed wearing.
Why do you think it’s important to re-wear pieces in your closet? Let me know in the comments.
