A lot of people say that New Year’s resolutions are stupid because you should always be bettering yourself and I do agree. But I also know that that’s easier said than done. I love getting that extra push to do something I know I should, whether that be getting in shape because I know I’m going to need to bike to get around for the next 5 months, or having the realization that you need to start studying earlier because your B Law midterm didn’t go as planned (… oops!). Having that extra push works wonders for me, and maybe for some it doesn’t work quite as well. For you guys, congratulations, keep doing you! For people like me, lets sit down and chat for a while. I made some New Year’s resolutions/a 2017 Bucket List on January 1st but I wanted to do something a little more fashion related this week. I have come up with some fashion resolutions to start off the new year with a bang!
2017 Fashion Resolutions
1.Wear whatever I want
High school was not a great time in my life. I took to heart what people thought of me, especially when they said I was too obsessed with clothes (sorry, but no s***). They turned that into a bad thing and so I thought it was a bad thing. Now, people may not like some fashion choices I make (or me for that matter!) but really who cares, they’re not the ones who have to wear it! On that note, I plan to wear whatever I want and be confident in my choices. At the end of the day, I can decide if I love the outfit/piece or not and choose if it stays in my closet or go to the donate pile.
2. Make my own trends
I am a trend follower for sure. I don’t follow all of them because some are just not for me, but a lot I actually end up loving and turning them into regular wardrobe pieces rather than trends. On that note, I want to start making my own trends this year. That means (from #1), wearing what I want and showing others why they need what I’m wearing.
3. Only buy things I really want
I used to have a tendency to buy things because they were on sale. It’s a vicious trap that clothing companies trick you into, and it works for them. Over the past few years though, since my fashion choices have graduated from solely Bluenotes and sale rack Superstore to more expensive places, it’s even more important to only buy things that I love. If the dress is too short, the arm holes too big, or the colour not perfect, walk away. I don’t remember who I heard this from but if you don’t love it in the store, you won’t even like it in your closet. Right you are person I can’t remember.
4. Clean out my closet on a regular basis
I am the first to admit that cleaning out my closet is one of my favourite things to do. It usually only ends up with me getting rid of 2 or 3 things and deciding that the other 10 I was unsure about before will definitely be worn very soon (yeah right). But this year I am making the commitment to only keep things that make me feel A+. Why in the world should I keep a skirt that makes me feel like I’ve forgotten calories exist in cheesecake? The answer is I shouldn’t. Keep things that make me feel good, and ditch things that don’t. It’s that simple. You’d be shocked how well this works when you actually put it into use!
5. Add more of what I need and less of what I want to my wardrobe
Edmonton doesn’t leave a ton of time to prance around in little tank tops and short shorts. Despite this, I own a lot of both (I blame tank tops being dirt cheap). When I actually think about it though, rarely do I leave the house without some sort of sweater, even in the summer. So why do I keep buying tank tops and have no cardigans to go over top when I get chilly? I can’t answer that for you. But this year, I’m determined to buy more of what I need (I use need loosely here), and less of what I want. That means investing more in quality coats that will keep me warm and cardigans that can go overtop of my existing tank top collection, and less short sleeve tops and sundresses.
What are your goals in regards to fashion this year?

I think my goal at the moment need to have a bit of a spending ban. Boring I know but I have a tad to many pieces in my wardrobe that I haven’t even worn yet. Other than that I plan to keep doing me and try not ta have an age crisis./ida

Sometimes, a spending ban is the best thing for your wardrobe and wallet! Even shopping around your closet for things you haven’t worn can work to avoid buying new pieces. Good luck!

Love your goals, Victoria! I also want to clean out my closet more this year–I have so many pieces that I don’t wear but still hang onto for no reason! Cheers to a more organized closet in 2017! 🙂

Exactly! It’s quite the problem plaguing my closet atm; I need to get them out so I can bring more pieces in!
