You might have seen on my Instagram that I was in Washington D.C. in mid April to visit some friends from my exchange semester to Copenhagen. I was in the city for just under 5 days and was amazed at how much there was to do! I was lucky enough to have a great tour guide (my friend who goes to school in the city!). She knew the best spots in town, both wholesome activities and not so wholesome.. AKA her explanation for the tourist spots and the bars. Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be sharing exactly what we did, the places we visited, what we ate, and of course, what I wore!
My trip was scheduled from Wednesday to Monday, with the first and last day being mostly dedicated to travel. I flew into Ronald Reagan Airport which was super convenient to get into the city by train; the train only cost me around $4.75! RR Airport is a domestic airport, so as an international traveler, it added at least one stop to my itinerary; I would say definitely worth it since getting into the city was pennies compared to other airports you could fly into.
My first night Washington, my friend and I hit up Bindaas for dinner. It was Indian style tapas (I know, little strange of a concept, but actually worked so well!). For our first night out, we went to Hill Country BBQ for some Kareoke fun. Later, we made our way over to 18th Street Lounge for live Reggae music! I actually loved both places because they were intimate feeling without being to “clubby”, if you catch my drift. I would for sure recommend either if you’re looking for something to do in the late evening. These two spots were my favourite in all the nights out we had!
The next morning, we were picking our third and final travel buddy up from the train so we decided to kill time with breakfast and shopping. We ate at an adorable french style pastry and sandwich shop called Paul. It had the most delicious egg, ham, and cheese croissants. So delicious in fact, that I insisted we go back to the same spot on my last day. Why fix what isn’t broken, am I right?! There are a few locations around the city, and apparently it’s actually a chain, with locations around the US. We later headed to Georgetown and stopped in a few of my USA faves, like Madewell (where I snagged the cutest overalls!), as well as & Other Stories (which I originally found in Copenhagen!) where I bought these super comfy heels.
That warm Thursday, the three of us headed to the National Mall. (I literally thought that was a mall until we got there #fail) We saw the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the World War II Memorial before walking over to Tidal Basin for the cherry blossoms.
We got beyond lucky to see them in full bloom. It was AMAZING because you all know how much I adore flowers. Plus, it was wild to look around and see cherry blossom trees blooming for what seemed like miles around the water! Finally, we made our way to check out the White House. It was way smaller than I imagined TBH, and went to the Renwick contemporary art museum (for free!) around the corner.
Make sure to wear your walking shoes because I clocked in at over 25,000 steps. Thankfully I was still feeling fresh to death thanks to my Stan Smiths, which have been my go-to travel shoe for a while now.
Barcelona was our chosen dinner spot. Thank goodness we had made a reservation earlier because it was absolutely PACKED. Try and make resos for your dinner spots. Those Washingtonians were ready to start enjoying the warm weather in every restaurant they could! This place was tapas style and had the most delish sangria and bacon wrapped dates! Afterwards, we got on our best dancing outfits and headed to Madhatter!
It was an awesome day exploring the city. All the monuments looked exactly like they had on all the shows I watch (I’m looking at you Designated Survivor and Scandal!). I made the mistake of wearing too much because it was super hot, but thanks to the breeze, my gorgeous long line coat was perfect paired with jeans and my favourite Rebecca Minkoff bag.
