Well that dreaded time has come. We are days away from the first syllabus class, and just weeks away from the first dreaded rounds of midterms. Along with that comes long nights in the library and less than ideal bank account balances.
Back to School Tips
In preparation for September, I have come up with a few of my tried and true back to school tips to help make the school year even slightly easier. These back to school tips highlight the before, and during to ensure your school year starts on the right foot.
1. Clean before school starts
I am the first to admit that my life is messier during the school year. My room, my bathroom, my kitchen.. it all takes a backseat to studying and having fun to counteract the studying. For this reason, I make absolute sure that I clean everything before September. I want my life in tip top shape before the start of school and hopefully, the cleanliness will hold as long as possible.
2. Input everything into your schedule the day you get it
If I have one tip to offer, this is it. I cannot tell you how many times I have saved my own butt for being proactive in the first week and inputting all my important dates into my calendar on my phone. I prefer an electronic calendar for school because I can access it on my phone and my computer. It is different for everyone though, some people feel better about having a hand held copy. I use my Apple calendar for all things school and life related, aka, all my activities, deadlines, and important dates. I also carry around a blog calendar that is in paper copy. It helps me stay organized when I know what I am going to be posting each week on my blog and social media outlets.
3. Come up with outfits for the first week
Having outfits planned that you know look good is a morning lifesaver. The first week of school, I always want to feel my best; I’m seeing people I haven’t seen in 4 months! But at the same time, waking up early and trying to make sure I look good is not always my favorite part. By planning outfits in advance I make sure I feel good about the way I look those first few weeks, while cutting the time of my morning routine in half! Check out this outfit and this outfit for a little bit of back to school outfit inspo!
4. Stay on top of your opening assignments
We all know that the first month/3 weeks/2 weeks, depending on how cruel your teachers are with midterms, are the least stressful you’re going to get for the next 4 months. So for your own well being, keep up on your assignments. It can be difficult with all the exciting events happening, but take that extra hour or two at night or inbetween classes to jot down some ideas for that essay, write that paragraph, or complete that super easy intro assignment. You and your calendar will thank you later.
5. Have fun
In my first year of university, I did nothing. I didn’t join any clubs, go to any events, do any activities, nothing. And I was miserable for it. My biggest piece of advice is to do all those things. Go to that party on a Wednesday because why not? You have very few responsibilities this early in the game, and later when you can’t do anything because of midterms, you’ll be glad you made those memories and met those people. You never know who’s going to be needing a presentation partner sometime soon! My favorite things to do during the first few weeks are going to all the free events held on campus. You can nearly eat for a week for free with all the things going on! Head to that football game with your cutest plaid in tow and have a little fun!
There ya have it, my tried and true back to school tips to make this year a little more bearable. Coming from my first year where misery was on every doorstep and lecture hall seat, to second year where I met some amazing people and had some of the best times of my life, I know what I’m talking about. So go have some fun, you won’t regret it later!
