Last week, my parents and I had the opportunity to attend a breakfast hosted by CPA (my mom’s an accountant), where they brought in Amanda Lindhout to speak. If you don’t know who she is, Amanda Lindhout is the author of A House in the Sky, originally from Red Deer Alberta, who has been on the New York Times Bestseller list for years.
The book is a memoir of Amanda’s life as she travelled around the world, and eventually got kidnapped in Somalia. The kidnappers kept her and her friend for over 450 days and only were released by a ransom. If you have not read this book, I strongly recommend that you do. It has turned into one of my all time favourite books after I got it for my birthday a few years back. I was initially drawn to the story because her history with Alberta (there’s not a ton of popular books coming out of this province).
If you have read the book, I think the most enlightening thing that I read was the fact that one of the kidnappers had gotten into NYU. He was going to use the money from the ransom to pay for his plane ticket over. That was absolutely baffling to me that someone that was capable of such gross indecency was accepted at a western university. I mean, in reality, how could they possibly know (they couldn’t), but it just got me thinking about if people at my own school had done something so inhumane. Thankfully, or unthankfully for the hostages, he didn’t get the money in time to fly over for the fall semester.
The opportunity to see her speak in person was incredible and I am so thankful my mom agreed to bring me along. As it was a professional event, the dress code was business casual. Being in the School of Business, I’d be damned if I didn’t know how to dress for a business event (hello every presentation, project, gathering, picture, etc, etc I’ve ever done). So for this morning, I pulled out my Banana Republic blazer, Aritzia short sleeve button up and I was good to go.
I paired these with my black jeans and by Steve Madden open toe booties, and swiped on a bright lip to pull the outfit together.
In the past, I have worn this outfit to a luncheon event for a club I am a part of at school, as well as other events, and I really like doing a milkmaid braid with it because it keeps my hair out of my face.
These booties are perfect for a business casual event; they’re fancy enough but add a little casual element with the cut outs. I wouldn’t wear them to a business professional event for the exact same reason — toes out is a no no.
PS I’m going to need to hit up the sun ASAP
