I never truly believed I was a pack rat until my stint in Copenhagen came to an end and I arrived home to so. much. clutter. Living out of 2 suitcases for 6 months really shows you how little you actually use day to day. So with that, I set out to declutter my life, starting with my closet! As a self proclaimed shopping addict, my closet accumulates lots over the course of time. Often, I find it hard to narrow down what to keep and what to ditch. But, fear not, I have come up with the things that help me seriously declutter my closet to allow for less sh*t in your house, and more importantly, room to buy more!
6 Easy Closet Decluttering Tips
Start with a clean space
I always find it easier to begin decluttering with a clean space. It allows for more room to organize the decluttering process. On some level, it gives me a little extra boost of motivation to get rid of more stuff that I don’t need. Seeing my space clean and organized always puts me in a better mood, and it’s no different when you’re decluttering that pre-cleaned space!
Have separate spaces for sell, donate, recycle and trash
You should always have at least 4 different spaces set aside for things you are going to sell, donate, recycle and throw away. In my decluttering, I always try and throw away as little as possible. I hate waste, and the fact that most of the stuff I’m getting rid of is perfectly good, it would be an absolute shame to trash it. On that note though, there are some things that even Goodwill doesn’t deserve, but, if the item is made of fabric, you can actually recycle it at certain stores (H&M has a bin currently)! You should also separate 2 piles for give away and sell. I recently have started selling some of my higher end pieces, with the instruction to the consignment shop that whatever they don’t sell can be donated. It’s a great way to add a few bucks to your pocket while still making sure you’re not bringing unwanted items back into your home if they don’t end up being purchased.
Only keep things that make you happy
This took me a little while to get the hang of but once you do, there will be a lot of things going to that donate pile. If there is something you own that doesn’t make you think, “Oh that’s so pretty” or “Damn, I look good in this”, is it really worth the space in your life? I say, hard no. There are so many things that I adore, I don’t want to be wasting my precious space on something that was a regretted impulse buy.
Organize as you go
It’s easy to take things out and shove them back into your closet with little effort, but take that extra step and hang it nicely on you’re prettiest hangers, or put it back where it belongs. As above, it’s so refreshing to have a clean space and even more so after you’ve just spent your time decluttering.
DARE to wear
My best tip, and the one I find the most effective is actually wearing the pieces you’re unsure of! It’s easy to say that you might wear it or you “actually really like it”, but what happens when the gloves come off and you have to wear it to the office, or out to brunch? That’s when your true feelings come out. If you wear it and you aren’t convinced, toss it into a giveaway pile. But, if after that day on the town in your oldie but goodie you’re feeling it, it’s headed right back in the closet and you have yourself an old fave (like this dress I found in my fall clean out)!
Don’t go too far
Let me paint you a picture, when I was 10, I found a little container of rose petals in my closet. I was in a mood to get rid of things (apparently it’s been life long for me!), and so I threw them in the trash without a second thought. Only later did I find out that those were the roses my dad had gotten my mom on the day I was born. I know. FAIL. I will be forever kicking myself after that one. My point is, if you’re unsure.. keep it! If in a few days or weeks you realize that you love it, then hey, you’ve still got it! If on the other hand you look at it again and are less than excited about it, then it’s time it hits one of your piles!
I swear decluttering is good for the body, mind and soul. I am constantly getting rid of things that don’t turn my crank anymore. It always feels great to see less things around me that I love more and more! It’s definitely an ongoing process so take your time; it will not happen overnight, no matter how late you stay up!
